Getting from one place to another is very important while traveling. Figuring out the train, tram, and bus situation was probably the most challenging adversary I faced while traveling. You will get lost. It is okay. Don't be afraid to ask a stranger for help. Researching the transportation systems before traveling will help, but it is honestly a learning experience.

Payment

How the hell do you pay for the train? Through looking through the depths of reddit, I still was not able to figure this out until I landed. You can use Google/Apple Pay on your phone to scan in and out of different stations. Buses have "tap to pay & checkin/out" pads at the bus entryways. The only tip I'd give is to pay in advance for long train rides (30 mins+). Many apps are available to do this. They have train conductors, and they scan a QR code on your phone as proof you paid for the ride.

Transit Systems

It is always good to know the different systems. What train circuit you are on or bus number even. This will help if you need to ask for help. My favorite thing to do was to go to the help desk at train stations just to get the lay of the land. I also would go to the help desk if I was traveling from one country to another via train. I would ask an expert what my exact route was even if I was sure as well as alternate routes just in case anything happened.

Google Maps

I cannot say this enough. Google Maps is a godsend. It gives you real-time train and bus schedules, as well as real-time stops. This helps when there is a language barrier. As I cannot speak or write in Dutch or French. It helps to have a visual cue. I always advise having a backup route in case you do not make it to your stop in time.
